Shane Larmand playing Live Music Monday in Radium

Shane Larmand is boldly expanding his singer/songwriter career, to the excitement of many fans who have enjoyed his work in a plethora of blues, rock, country and metal bands. Shane has a very balanced sound in his original work – imagine airy, open sounds soaring over roots and blues earth tones. He is looking to play the kind of quality venues that will help build his fan base and provide an authentic experience for new listeners.

The development of his unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family meant that Shane was always surrounded by different forms of music. His father was a full-time nightclub entertainer fronting various bands in the burgeoning 60’s Toronto music scene on Yonge Street. Both of his brothers excelled in their respective instruments and his parents exposed him to an eccentric mix of African American Soul, Canadian Folk and Outlaw country, all of which influenced his development.

His first foray into learning an instrument began when he started to play the drums in his teens. He deeply devoted himself to the drums and played in a variety of High School bands – mostly in a hard rock/metal style.  However, during this time he also became fascinated with the acoustic guitar, folk artists of the 60’s – particularly Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot – and began furiously writing songs with that inspiration.

After realising that making music was his dream, he began to showcase his talent in various venues across Edmonton, playing at numerous gigs and making sure that his name and music were being heard by as many people as possible. He played in a variety of bands, such as Another Midnight Revival, Super G70 and The Downtown Buttah Blues Band, showcasing his drum skills, yet still really not pushing forward with his original songs.

So, the time came for a change and Shane headed east to Ontario to pursue his original music and perhaps accomplish some recordings with his brother, who lived in the Toronto area. Life happened, Shane wandered a bit working odd jobs at factories and fish restaurants and playing his songs in churches converted into coffee shops. However, he still felt like his recording and music dreams were unrealized. He even spent time playing and entertaining at Puck’s Farm, a petting zoo managed by a fellow who just happened to be the one-time manager of Buffalo Springfield – Barry Friedman.

However, Barry Friedman didn’t have the influence on the music scene that he did in the 60’s when he discovered Buffalo Springfield, and Shane was still refining his song writing craft and confidence, so the recordings completed in the Puck’s Farm Barn studio didn’t gain much traction. A return to Alberta saw Shane side step into a role playing bass and singing in a diverse funk/blues/rock trio known as The Fire Seeds.

However, after years of refining and teaching music Shane’s song writing has matured, his sound has coalesced into a rich mix of styles and instruments – acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, harmonica and vocals – and he is ready to focus solely on growing his art form and fan base.
