The Horsethief Pub is thrilled to have the Mike MacKenzie Band visit Radium.  This high energy band will be a great way to kickstart your weekend.  Music starts at 10:30.

The Mike MacKenzie Band

With a diverse palette of influences, the Mike MacKenzie Band is a powerful, bluesy, tour-de-force musical unit. Each member has the tools and opportunity to add their personality to the melting pot and a potent brew is cooked up at every performance. From large outdoor stages to intimate bar gigs, they consistently present their brand of fiery blues-rock with passion and conviction.

Through a culmination of experiences, Mike was led to assemble this group (circa 2011) with players who could share his appreciation for an eclectically entertaining set list and execute it with the necessary rock and roll edge. Some of these relationships go back over ten years – many rehearsals, gigs and road miles shaping them into a cohesive team sharing the same vision. Mike had previously been involved in numerous original rock bands, studied jazz at Calgary’s Mount Royal University and always had a deep-seeded foundation in the blues. Eventually the stars aligned and he was able to devise a product of all these important ingredients. Before long, the band hit their stride and have since done their utmost to maintain a high level of delivery and continually raise the bar for themselves. Although based out of Calgary, most of their performances are scattered across Western Canada in variety of settings including festivals, theatres, hotels and more.

The MMB is influenced by such predecessors as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers, but undeniably have a sound all their own. Mike plays guitar and sings and is joined by the stellar cast of James Wise (drums), Thomas Hart (bass & backup vocals), Kurtis Downs (guitar) and Steve Fletcher (keyboards). They approach each show as a chance to break new ground, refine their sound and leave an inspired audience in their wake.

The debut Mike MacKenzie album “Natural Causes” was released in 2014, being called “a richly diverse selection but always interesting” by Classic Rock Society and “a substantial level of songwriting craft” by Blues Matters Magazine. More recently, he and the band completed and released the follow-up “Solstice”(October 2017) consisting of ten new original tracks. So far it has been featured in several newspaper/magazine write-ups, received nation-wide college radio airplay and is for sale in record shops across Alberta (as well as all digital music platforms). They are enjoying playing the new music and aim to continue their ascent towards being a top Canadian act and unforgettable concert experience.
